For the second straight year, Eastern Mennonite University is finding a unique way to draw attention to their student-athletes.
EMU’s graduating student-athletes were photographed wearing both their Eastern Mennonite sport jersey as well as their graduating gown, re-enforcing the roles of both the student and the athlete. The images will be displayed around the athletic suite and main hallway of University Commons.
“I have been looking for ways that we can truly celebrate and honor the student-athlete,” explained Director of Athletics Dave King. “The ‘athlete’ portion is visible on the court or field and in the press. But the ‘student’ portion often goes unnoticed. These photos are the tangible reality of our goal to see student-athletes receive their diploma. It is the standard we set for our athletes and having incoming freshmen see these examples will hopefully inspire them to put in the time and energy needed to achieve this goal for themselves.”
Official EMU Athletics photographer Scott Eyre took all of the images. Similar to the student-athletes, Eyre also celebrates multiple roles as both a student (2016 EMU graduate) as well as an employee (EMU’s Lead Residence Director and former assistant softball coach).
