Eastern Mennonite University is gearing up for its Centennial Homecoming & Family Week, with this year’s festivities even more packed than usual as the institution celebrates 100 years.

Starting tomorrow, the Athletic Department is contributing its fair share to the activities in 2017, including a number of sporting events, a special Hall of Honor breakfast, and the annual Paul R. Yoder, Sr., Golf Classic.

Paul R. Yoder, Sr., Golf Classic
Generally a kickoff to Homecoming, the 26th annual Yoder Golf Classic is Thursday at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg. The Classic was moved up one day from its traditional spot during the weekend to accommodate all of the extra activities on campus.

A fundraiser hosted by the Royals Club, EMU’s athletic fundraiser club, the Yoder Golf Classic never fails to give supporters a great time full of laughs with friends. The format is four-person captain’s choice, with shotgun starts at both 8:30am and 1:30pm. There are prizes on all of the par three holes.

The annual golf outing is named for the late Paul R. Yoder Sr., a longtime Mennonite pastor and avid EMU sports fan.

Hall of Honor Breakfast
Saturday will be the busiest day on campus, starting with the Hall of Honor Breakfast in the morning. This year’s ceremony will function more like a reception and will feature special speakers including Hall of Honor members Miriam “Mim” Mumaw, Sandy Brownscombe and Deana Moren Baker.

EMU’s Hall of Honor contains 94 former players and coaches, as well as four teams and six administration honorees from the era known as “The First 60 Years.” Mumaw is part of that venerated group.

Athletic Events
There will also be numerous intercollegiate games on campus starting on Wednesday.

  • Wednesday - Men’s Soccer vs. Washington and Lee, 7:00pm
  • Thursday - Women’s Volleyball vs. Ferrum, 7:00pm
  • Friday - Women’s Soccer vs. Emory & Henry, 7:00pm (Senior Recognition)
