Homecoming 2012: Full Slate Of Events, Golf, Inductions And More
Full schedule of athletic events planned; Phillies catcher Kratz returns
There is a host of interesting activities on the schedule of activities planned for EMU’s Homecoming and Family Weekend, Oct. 12-14. Among them is the return of Erik Kratz ’02, currently a catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team.
The other athletic events are the Hall of Honor induction ceremony, Paul R. Yoder Sr. Golf Classic, baseball alumni game and four intercollegiate games.
“We’ve established a goal of connecting with as many former players as possible,” said Dave King, director of athletics at EMU. “Homecoming is one of the premier opportunities for us to connect current players with our alumni athletes. So I hope that many former players return to campus and engage the memories they built during their playing days here.”
Philadelphia Phillies catcher Erik Kratz ’02 will be a special guest at this year’s Paul R. Yoder Sr. Golf Classic. It will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
The format for the event, hosted by the Loyal Royals, is four-person “captain’s choice,” with shotgun starts at both 8:00am and 1:00pm. A continental breakfast will be offered at 7:30am and lunch at 1:00pm. A hole-in-one prize of $10,000 is among the prizes.
In addition to meeting Kratz, participants will get to interact with members of EMU’s brand-new golf team that plays in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. EMU golf apparel will also be for sale.
The annual golf outing is named for the late Paul R. Yoder Sr., a longtime Mennonite pastor and avid EMU sports fan.
The entrance fee for the benefit golf classic is $100 per golfer for one tee time or $160 to play both morning and afternoon rounds. Sponsorships are also available at a variety of levels.
The event is a fundraiser for the Loyal Royals, EMU’s official athletic booster club. The group provides emotional and financial support for EMU coaches and student athletes.

A baseball standout from 10 years ago and a ground-breaking team from 32 years ago are the 2012 inductees into EMU’s Athletics Hall of Honor. The induction ceremony will take place at a breakfast event on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 8:30am in Court C of the University Commons.
The baseball standout is Erik Kratz ’02, who now plays for the Philadelphia Phillies. A starting catcher all four years (1999-2002), Kratz was the first EMU baseball player to reach the major leagues. He was named the ODAC Player of the Year for his junior and senior seasons, and graduated with no less than 27 records, including the NCAA record for career doubles at 77.
The team is the 1980 women’s field hockey squad. Coached by Sandy Brownscombe, this young team advanced to the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women National Tournament, the precursor of the NCAA Tournament, for the first time in school history. They helped to usher in an era of dominating field hockey teams at Eastern Mennonite.
The cost of the breakfast event is $8. Reservations are required. Contact the athletic office at 540-432-4440 for more information.
