Homecoming 2012: A Recap
Homecoming 2012 was a fantastic success, full of good weather and great friends. If you made it to Harrisonburg, you'll enjoy looking through the photo galleries linked below. If you didn't make it here, look through the photo galleries so that you know what you missed!
Paul R. Yoder Sr. Golf Classic
The weekend started with the Loyal Royals' annual golf fundraiser held at Heritage Oaks. After a delayed start to let the frost melt off of the course, well over 100 golfers enjoy a fantastic day at morning and afternoon tee times. Thanks to a ton of sponsors, especially Chick-fil-A for breakfast and lunch! It was also great to have Philadelphia Phillie Erik Kratz on hand as our celebrity golfer. Erik played the 17th hole with every foursome in the afternoon and got to be pretty good at scouting out the green! We also had the brand new EMU golf teams out on the course and selling EMU golf apparel. Dare I say a good time was had by all?!
Hall of Honor Induction Breakfast
Saturday morning was our chance to induct 2002 baseball grad Erik Kratz and the 1980 field hockey team into the Hall of Honor. While it's fitting to honor a handful of our deserving student-athletes, everyone in attendance will speak about the joy of hearing the inductees give their speeches. This year we heard the story of a field hockey goalie correcting an official to say that she DID allow a goal on a penalty stroke. We also had the joy of listening to a humble Erik Kratz talk about his experience playing baseball. The inductees also were recognized by President Loren Swartzendruber at the Festive Gathering, which is the campus-wide kick-off to Homecoming.
***An official DVD of the inductions and acceptance speeches can be purchased from EMU by contacting Lucinda Schlabach via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone (540-432-4440).
Baseball Alumni Game
This year's baseball alumni game continued to have a better showing of alumni coming back! We had a great range of players from 15 years ago to a few from last year's squad, and to see them all on the same field as the 2013 Royals was great. Erik Kratz also made an appearance, although he did not play. Same story for a handful of former players and coaches who chose to enjoy the game from the stands. While it may be strange to see "college" baseball in the fall, it sure was fun!
1998 Men's Soccer Team
At halftime of Saturday's nightcap (the men's soccer game), we also had the chance to honor the 1998 men's soccer team. That year the Royals won just their second ODAC Championship with a win at Virginia Wesleyan in double overtime. Then they advanced into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and earned themselves a banner in Yoder Arena! So at halftime we put the team out at midfield with their ODAC Championship banner before unveiling the NCAA banner from the pressbox behind them. It was good to recognize those guys, and hopefully to inspire another run to an ODAC title and the NCAA Tournament!
