    EMU made run after run in the second half, but couldn’t overcome Washington and Lee’s lead, eventually dropping a 97-82 decision on the road Wednesday night. Now 5-8 overall, the Royals will look for their first conference win on Saturday afternoon against Lynchburg College.
  • EMU Men Handled By Guilford College

    EMU’s basketball men failed to find their rhythm against Guilford College in Yoder Arena on Saturday afternoon. As a result, the Runnin Royals fell to the Quakers in a 74-58 loss, shooting just 7-for-24 from long range. The decision drops the Royals to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in the ODAC.

    Eastern Mennonite University has announced that head men’s basketball coach Kirby Dean will resign at the end of the current season. He has accepted a position as the director of parks and recreation for Rockingham County.

    Despite a rocky game, the Runnin Royals were nearly rescued by a last-second three pointer at the end of regulation and overtime. Both went in, however, Bridgewater’s men responded with threes of their own to steal a late 81-80 decision over Eastern Mennonite Wednesday night in Harrisonburg.

    The start time of EMU men's basketball game on Wednesday against Frostburg State has been moved up to 6:00pm. The non-conference game in Yoder Arena is the final pre-Christmas event for each team.

    For the first 20 minutes, Eastern Mennonite and Hampden-Sydney went back and forth, locked in a game with a few ties and nine lead changes. The Runnin Royals began to find their stride in the second, but ultimately the score tilted in the Tigers' favor, 80-73.

    The Royals used good shooting, assisted play, and stingy defense to run away to a 98-83 win over Hood College Tuesday night in Harrisonburg. Senior RaShawn Latimer led the charge for EMU finishing with 24 points, five assists and three rebounds. Eastern Mennonite improves to 2-2 on the season.

    With 5 seconds left in overtime, Xavier McCants (Olney, Md./Sherwood) took off, hoping to get to the hoop or find an open man. Instead the Royals felt the pressure and called a time out with just 2.1 seconds left. Unfortunately there was just not enough time for the EMU men to convert, as they fell 86-85 to the University of Mary Washington in the 2017 season opener.

    Head men’s basketball coach Kirby Dean acknowledged that there are two different philosophies when it comes to scheduling a season. The first option is to schedule games that translate to a winning record from the start. The second option values scheduling opponents that will challenge and prepare a team to peak at the right time, which in turn, could deflate the number of victories within a single season.
