It was a cold night for the EMU's basketball men, shooting just 36% in an 87-69 loss at Shenandoah Wednesday.

Since wrapping up December with three straight games shooting 50% or better from the floor, the Runnin Royals (6-9/1-6 ODAC) have yet to crack 41% through five games in January. EMU is 1-4 in that stretch.

The men had a solid start, with post Sammy Thomas (Owings, Md./Northern) finding Maleke Jones (Charles Town, W.V./Washington) for a three pointer on the game's first possession. Four of their first five buckets came from outside, as EMU took a 14-10 lead on the road court.

As the threes dried up, the Royals kept pace from inside the arc, forging a 20-20 tie with 9:37 left in the half. But then they went quiet altogether, not scoring for nearly three minutes, as Shenandoah (8-8/3-4 ODAC) rattled off 10 unanswered points for the first sizeable lead of the game.

EMU got within six two different times, each on a layup from Xavier McCants (Olney, Md./Sherwood), before SU stretched the margin up to 47-36 at halftime.

The men got a steal to start the second, but came up empty after a couple of misses inside. That set the tone for the entire half, as the Royals never got closer than 10 points.

After hitting four triples in the first five minutes of the game, EMU made just 3-of-24 the rest of the way, settling at 7-30 (23%) for the game. There were 12-20 from the free throw line. Shenandoah shot nearly 47% from the floor, including 9-25 from long range.

The Royals did grab 19 offensive rebounds for an overall margin of 47-42, but were -5 in turnovers.

RaShawn Latimer (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) hit three triples and led all scorers with 16 points. Thomas came in with 11 points, eight rebounds (including six offensive) and four assists. Isaiah Harris-Winn (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) added nine and five while DJ Hill (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) chipped in seven off the bench.

Jonah Meredith led the Hornets' balanced effort with 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. Aaron Patterson had 13 points, four assists and a pair of steals.

The Royals return home on Saturday to host Randolph College at 2:00pm.
