Golfers Close Year At ODAC Championships

The EMU golf men finished up their 2013-14 campaign at the ODAC Championships, settling for 10th place at the three-day tournament.  The Royals struggled on the final day and finished with a total of 1077 (+213) as a team.  Guilford College hosted the tourney at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.

Sophomore Josh Alderfer (Faber, Va./Nelson County) was Eastern Mennonite's top golfer each day and carded a 257 (+41).  He had a low round of 83 on Monday and tied for 27th out of the 49 golfers.  Caleb Schlabach (Millersburg, Oh./Hiland) also had his best score on day two, firing an 86 on the par 72 course.  His three-day total was 272 (+56) for 42nd place.

Zach Bowles (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) was at his best on Sunday, carding an 88.  The senior finished at 277 (+61) for 46th place.  Classmate John Toney (Buckingham, Va./Buckingham County) continued his improved play this spring, by lowering his score every day at the ODAC Championships.  He came in at 281 (+65) to place 47th.  Mark Shaner (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) shot an 88 on Sunday, but withdrew on the final day and did not earn an individual place.

Host Guilford ran away with the team title on the final day, totaling 904 (+40) to beat Washington and Lee by 19 strokes.  GC's Tanner Gross also claimed the medalist honors by beating W&L's Conley Hurst in a playoff hole.  Both men carded a 222 (+6).
