Great serving snowballed into a sweep on Saturday, as EMU's volleyball men took a 3-0 win from visiting Arcadia University. The Royals improved to 4-2 with the non-conference victory.

Tim Callahan (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) helped the men open up a 17-10 lead in the first set, landing a pair of ace serves in a 5-0 run. Arcadia (2-4) snuck within 19-18, but the Royals' lead was too much to overcome in a 25-22 final.

The Knights regrouped for a quick 5-2 lead in the second, but EMU answered with a 5-1 jab to take the lead. Arcadia tied the score at 7-7, but would never get back in front as the men led by as many as seven in a 25-19 win.

Eastern Mennonite took over early in the third, opening up an 11-6 lead. Travis Abele (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) landed the final shot in a no doubter, 25-16.

Serving was a key, as the men kept Arcadia out of their system all day. The Royals landed a season high nine aces in earning their second sweep of the year. They also hit a season best .316 on the offensive side of the net.

Callahan was an all-around force, led by his career high four aces. He landed 11 kills at a .562 clip and added three blocks. William Ragland (North Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) had 11 kills of his own and put down a pair of aces as well. Abele and Dan Lutz (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) each added seven kills as setter Christian Taylor (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) doled out 34 assists.

Libero Micah Buller (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) led all players with eight digs.

Jason Manley was Arcadia's main weapon, earning 11 kills.

EMU ventures into CVC play next weekend, making a trip to Pennsylvania. The Royals play at Thiel College in Greenville on Friday. Note the new start time of 4:00pm. Then on Saturday, they play at defending champion Juniata, also at 4:00pm.
