EMU scored 14 runs and had 23 hits in Sunday's doubleheader at Lynchburg. Despite all the offense, it wasn't enough as the Lady Royals took a pair of disappointing ODAC losses.
Lynchburg 11, EMU 10
Eastern Mennonite looked in full control of this game, taking a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But the wheels fell off as the Hornets strung together seven hits and took advantage of an EMU error to score seven times and steal the 11-10 win on a two-out, two-run single. Five of the seven runs in the frame were unearned.
The Lady Royals scored in five of the seven innings. Sara Jenkins (Stanley, VA/Page County) hit a two-run bomb to center field in the first as EMU went up 3-0. The women led 9-4 after six, with Rasheeda Crews (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) adding a solo homerun in the seventh.
Lisa Lee (Buckingham, VA/Buckingham County) took the loss from the circle, as she allowed 15 hits. EMU's defense also committed six errors in the game.
Crews led the offense by going 3-4 with her longball. She also scored three times. Jenkins and Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) each finished 2-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) reached base three times with a pair of hits and a walk while Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) added a couple of RBIs.
Lynchburg 6, EMU 4
The women shored up their defense in game two but still couldn't keep the Hornets off the board. Eastern Mennonite took the first lead on an RBI single from Hensley in the third inning.
Lynchburg got a two-run homer in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth to go ahead 4-1. The Lady Royals tied it up in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Megan Viafora (Stanley, VA/Page County) got an infield single to score once and the Hornets committed an error as part of the play to allow another runner to score. Lee followed with a single up the middle to make it 4-4.
But the home team zipped right back in front. Molly Smith (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) took over in the circle in the sixth and retired the first two batters. A walk and infield single put two runners on, and a double to center plated both to put LC back in front 6-4.
EMU got a one-out walk in the seventh, but Jenkins popped up and Crews grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.
The Lady Royals had nine hits in the nightcap, although all of them were singles. Hensley had three hits with an RBI. Allman and Crews each had a single and a walk, while also scoring one run.
Aylor started and allowed four runs over 5.0 innings and took a no decision. Smith pitched the sixth inning and was tagged with the loss.
The two losses give Eastern Mennonite their first losing streak of the season. At 19-5 overall and 3-3 in the ODAC, the Lady Royals are at Randolph on Wednesday.
