Eastern Mennonite welcomes Virginia Wesleyan to Harrisonburg on Saturday. First pitch will be at 12:00pm in the ODAC-opening doubleheader for both teams.
After averaging 14.5 runs over their first two games, Wilkes (3-0) jumped on the board with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first. The teams traded runs in the third before the Colonels brought home two more in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.
The Royals kept on the pressure, scoring a single run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. However, they also left seven men on base over those three frames, including five in scoring position, only getting within 6-4.
Wilkes then blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh. Using two pitchers in the inning, EMU opened the door by issuing five free passes. The Colonels added a pair of singles to dent home four times, ballooning open a 10-4 margin.
Matt Curry (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) lofted a two-run homerun to left in the ninth, providing the final 10-6 score.
Jacob Merica (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) did his job out of the leadoff spot, reaching base three times with a pair of singles and a walk. He scored a run and drove in another. Tyler McFadden (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) earned two free passes and added a single.
Austin Carroll (Chester, Va./Matoaca) started on the mound, allowing six runs in 6.0 innings. He fell to 0-1 with the loss.
