The EMU baseball men dropped both games of their opening doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. The Royals look to salvage opening weekend with a win against the Battling Bishops tomorrow at 1:00pm.
N.C. Wesleyan 5, EMU 1 – 7 innings
Bailey Hall (Daleville, Va./James River) got the start for the Royals to begin the game one striking out three and giving up just one run in four innings of work without a decision. Zach Roberts (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) singled in Corey Willis (Fredricksburg, Va./Massaponax) in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one.
The Battling Bishops used a four run fifth inning to separate from EMU and take a 5-1 lead that they would hold on to for the rest of the game.
Roberts went 3-4 with the RBI and a stolen base. Jaylon Lee (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) hit a double and singled for EMU. Michael Wilhite (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) threw an inning and a third in relief for the Royals striking out two.
N.C. Wesleyan 4, EMU 3 – 7 innings
After pitching mostly in relief last season, senior Ryan Brewer (Martinsville, Va./Franklin County) took the mound in game two for EMU as they looked for the split. N.C. Wesleyan got on the board in the first inning after a lead-off double came around to score. The Royals loaded the bases in the top of the second inning, but failed to get a run across.
Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) hit a two-out double in the top of the third to get a rally going for EMU. Ray Tricarico (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) followed with a single that brought Lindsay around to score to even the game at one.
Three errors by the Royals allowed an unearned run to score in the bottom of the third for N.C. Wesleyan as they regained the lead.
Daniel Scott (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) walked to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Roberts singled then Lindsay bunted for a hit to load the bases. Ray Tricarico (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) walked with no outs to bring in Scott and tie the game. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance and Roberts to score giving EMU their first lead of the day at 3-2. Lee hit a sharp line drive that was stabbed out of the air by the third baseman and the next two batters got out to squander the inning.
The Battling Bishops loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth after an intentional walk with one out. A bases loaded walk followed by a sacrifice fly gave N.C. Wesleyan the lead back at 4-3.
The Royals made some noise in the sixth with a runner on second base and one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the potential rally and EMU went three up, three down in the seventh.
Roberts and Lindsay both had two hits for the Royals. Brewer went without a decision as Austin Carroll (Chester, Va./Matoaca) picked up the loss. Jonathan Nagle (Chesapeake, Va./Portsmouth Christian) threw two innings of scoreless relief.
