EMU put together six runs in Tuesday's non-conference hosting of Southern Virginia, but they couldn't slow down the Knights, who pounded out 20 hits. The result was a 10-6 loss for the Eastern Mennonite baseball men.
The Diamond Royals (12-16-1) stay at home for another non-conference contest on Wednesday, hosting Hood College at 4:00pm.
SVU (13-9) knocked in a single run in each of the first four innings to take the lead. Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) hit a solo home run in the second before lacing an RBI single in the fourth. That triggered a three-run inning as EMU tied the game at 4-4. Jordan Brake (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) added an RBI double in the frame.
After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, Southern Virginia surged ahead in the sixth. The first four batters reached against reliever Riley Wesp (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes), with two coming home on an RBI single. Gage Riddick (Gates County, N.C./Gate County) took over on the hill and momentarily stopped the scoring, but the momentum got away from the Royals.
SVU added one more in the seventh to bump the margin to 7-4. The visitors then got some clutch insurance in the top of the ninth, plating three more runs for a 10-4 lead.
The men looked for another late-inning rally and got the wheels moving with a one-out infield single from Jordan Jones (Saxe, Va./Randolph Henry) followed by a walk to Corey Willis (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax). One run scored on an error and another on a double from Ray Tricarico (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View). After a single and walk loaded the bases, Brake stepped to the plate as the potential tying run, but a tough called third strike ended the game.
Lindsey paced the offense, hitting 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. His home run was his second of the season. Tricarico finished 3-for-4 with a walk, accounting for two runs. Jones singled twice and walked, while Brake added a pair of hits.
Wesp took the loss for the two runs he gave up in the sixth. Riddick finished with five strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Michael Wilhite (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was the only of EMU's six pitchers to not allow a run, throwing for a scoreless 1.1 innings.
