Strong Second Half Pushes Hornets Past Royals

The EMU Runnin Royals fell in their conference opener to the University of Lynchburg today by a score of 87-72. The Hornets commanded the game from start to finish shooting 49.3% (35-71) from the field with 50 of their points coming in the paint, while the Royals shot 41.0% (25-61).

Lynchburg made their first shot from the field and never looked back as they led for almost the entire game. After Tariq Caldwell (Richmond, Va./Lee-Davis) collected an offensive rebound, Travis Clower (Romney, W.V./Hampshire) made a jump shot to tie the game at five with 17:43 left in the first half. The Hornets made a three-pointer a few possessions later to retake the lead that they would not give up again.

The Royals were able to chip away at the Lynchburg lead who led by as much as 13 in the first half. Sammy Thomas (Owings, Md./Northern) put in a layup as the final bucket for EMU to narrow the gap to two points before heading into halftime with the Hornets leading 40-38.

After each team traded ten points to start the second half, Lynchburg went on a 9-0 run in a two minute span to widen the gap with 13:32 left. EMU was unable to get within ten points of the Hornets the rest of the game.

Tim Jones (Forestville, Md./Central) had 11 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals for the Royals. Thomas finished as the EMU's leading scorer with 15 points while DJ Hill (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) had 10 points off the bench.

The Hornets were paced by Connor Schroeder who had 25 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Wrighten also had a double-double for Lynchburg with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

EMU looks to turn it around on Wednesday as they travel to Ferrum for a 7:00pm conference game.
