Already having the best season of his career, EMU center Sammy Thomas (Owings, Md./Northern) was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
This is the first conference award of the senior's career.
Thomas put together a pair of strong games to lead the Eastern Mennonite basketball men to two wins at the Don Glick Classic hosted by Bridgewater College. Thomas shot 17-of-23 (.739) for the week on the way to averaging 20.5 points and 6.0 boards.
He opened with 17 points and four rebounds in an 84-75 triumph over Apprentice School. EMU's big man was 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from the stripe. Thomas added two steals to his line. He followed with a career-high 24 points to go with eight rebounds in Sunday's 90-85 win over Buffalo State. He was 10-of-13 from the field in dominating the paint.
For the season, Thomas is ninth in the ODAC in scoring (15.2) while leading the league in field goal shooting at 68.4% (54-of-79).
Now 6-5, the Eastern Mennonite men play their final non-conference game of the year on Thursday at Frostburg State. Start time is 3:00pm.
