On a day lacking in normalcy, EMU's soccer men ended up on the short end of a 2-0 decision in their season opener against Maryville College.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Maryville, Tenn., but was moved a 25-minute drive away to the Sansom Sports Complex in Knoxville because of the rain. While the turf field made for slightly better playing conditions, the Royals still couldn't find the net.

Both teams had chances in the first half, with Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and Daniel Obour (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) each putting a shot on target for EMU.

Maryville finally cracked the scoring column in the 63rd minute when a corner kick deflected in off a Royals' defender. The Scots suddenly had a two-goal late less than nine minutes later, with Johnny Rakmonberdiev took a pass and scored on a breakaway.

Over the final 19 minutes, the playing conditions stayed as tough as the score as the Royals fell to 0-1.

Sophomore Cody Martin (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle) played in goal and made five saves.

Saturday's play at the Maryville College Soccer Invitational is expect to return to the campus of MC, with Eastern Mennonite taking on Covenant at 1:00pm.
