The EMU soccer men had to wait an extra day to earn their first win as they beat William Peace by a score of 2-1 on Sunday. Storms in the area Saturday night postponed the originally scheduled game.
The first corner play worked so well, that when EMU had another opportunity just a minute later, they did the same thing. Flores-Melgar sent in a ball that Kyle Shelton (Bumpass, Va./Spotsylvania) rose up to head into the goal to increase the lead to two for the Royals which would hold until halftime.
William Peace applied tough pressure to EMU in the second half and held them from scoring while adding a goal themselves in the 65th minute.
The Royals were able to contain the Pacers attack the remainder of the game and hold on to the win. Ahmed Zaatar (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) had six saves in goal for EMU.
The Royals head on the road for their next match playing at Southern Virginia on Wednesday, September 4 at 7:00pm.
In addition to the first win of the season, this game was the 250th career win for EMU men's soccer coach Dr. Roger Mast. Coaching in his 29th season, Mast has compiled a total record of 250-247-44 as the Royals' head coach.
