EMU's track & field teams are gearing up just in time, as they set a combined 20 personal records over the weekend. The Royals get next weekend off as they prepare for the ODAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 29. The ODAC meet is hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Va.
Eastern Mennonite set a handful of athletes on Friday and Saturday to the David Hemery Valentines Invitational, hosted by D-I Boston University. The men's fields in particular were huge, with the top-notch competition spurring on the Royals.
In the 800m, Isaac Alderfer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) won his heat by nearly two seconds. While his time of 1:56.57 put him 132nd out of 291 runners, he destroyed his PR by 1.56 and took over the top time in ODAC. It was also the No. 3 time in EMU history. Freshman Jansen Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) just missed his PR and finished third in his heat in a tight finish, crossing in 2:00.81.
Sophomore Alijah Johnson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass) broke his indoor PR in both his races, clocking at 22.51 in the 200m and 50.51 in the 400m.
The rest of the EMU men and women went to Hagerstown, Md., on Sunday for the Larry Sharpe Memorial. The women stole the show for the Royals, as all nine of them who participated in an individual event broke at least one PR.
Freshman Jordan Jones (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) won the high jump by clearing 1.47m. She took a second PR in the 500m with a time of 1:35.13.
