EMU's volleyball men have been picked No. 7 in the Continental Volleyball Conference Preseason Poll.
The preseason ranking places them in a similar spot to where they finished in 2019 - one spot out of the postseason tournament. The Royals earned 30 points in a vote of the CVC's coaches, just two points ahead of Elizabethtown but ten behind sixth-place Randolph-Macon.
Eastern Mennonite beat R-MC, their instant rivals, in the programs' first-ever meeting last spring, a 3-1 decision in Harrisonburg. The two finished in a three-way tie for seventh in the 2019 CVC standings, along with Elizabethtown.
Southern Virginia was the overhwleming choice to repeat as champions. The CVC now sits at ten member institutions following the departure of Ramapo and Cairn.
The Royals must replace All-CVC Second Team honoree Travis Abele along with a handful of other starters. Third-year coach Danielle Lickey will rely on two returning starters in setter Wyatt Bollinger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and middle Jacob Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) along with five other returners.
EMU opens the 2020 season on Sunday, Jan. 26, when they host NAIA opponent St. Andrews. The Royals also host a quad match exhibition in Yoder Arena on Saturday, Jan. 18, featuring a team of EMU alumni, a Richmond volleyball club, and CVC champion Southern Virginia.
