Freshman Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va./Broadway) launched a home run in each game as EMU's softball team picked up a pair of shutout wins over visiting Mary Baldwin on Wednesday. The Royals (8-2) have now won three games in a row by a combined score of 20-0.

Even with a pair of solid pitching performances, the tone for the day was set in the bottom of the first, when Campbell launched a one-out bomb over the fence in left field. It was her first collegiate hit. The hits kept coming, as Campbell added an RBI single in the next inning to cap a four-run outburst for a 5-0 lead. Danielle Brenneman (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) had a two-run double in the rally.

In the circle, left-hander Kelsi Martin (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) was cruising. After allowing a leadoff hit in the first, Martin retired nine straight Fighting Squirrels to breeze into the fourth inning. She allowed one hit in each the fourth and fifth innings, but remained in tight control of the game.

Taking a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, the Royals got a pair of infield singles to get things moving. With two outs, freshman Nicole Mongold (Page County, Va./Page County) drove a single up the middle to bring Brenneman around from second, ending the game in walk-off mercy style.

Campbell batted 3-4 with three RBIs to pace the Royals, who earned 15 hits in just five at-bats. Brenneman was 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) was 2-2 and accounted for three runs. Mongold, Taylor Hensley (Orange, Va./Orange County), and Cassidey Chrisman (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) each had a pair of hits.

Martin scatted three hits and struck out three for the complete game shutout. She lowered her ERA to 0.95 while earning her fifth win against no losses.

Pitcher Alia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the first in the nightcap, opening the door for her offense. Campbell, again hitting out of the second spot in the order, obliged with a one-out double to left center. Although she didn't score, her teammates picked up the slack in the second inning.

Sierra Lantz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) put the first run on the board, shooting a double to chase in Miller. Brenneman then doubled to lead off the third and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly from Mongold.

After Miller whiffed three sticks in the fourth to bump her strikeout total to eight, she triggered the offense with a leadoff single it the bottom of the frame. Lantz lofted a two-run homer with two outs, and then after back-to-back walks, Campbell did it again, pulling a three-run shot down the left field line to make it 7-0.

EMU left the bases loaded in the fifth and had a double play cut down a rally in the sixth, but Miller did not need any "mercy rule" help to end the game. She retired nine of 11 MBU batters over the final three frames, rolling to a complete game shutout.

Miller finished with a career high 11 strikeouts. It was also nearly triple the previous high (4) for any EMU pitcher this season. Miller improved to 2-2 with the win, lowering her ERA to 1.33.

Campbell put up an essentially identical line to the first game, going 3-4 with a home run and three RBIs. She put together a 6-for-8 day with six RBIs. Lantz, Campbell's high school teammate, was 3-3 with her homer, also driving in three runs.

Brenneman and Miller both reached base twice and scored twice.

The Royals stay at home on Sunday, hosting Averett in a doubleheader at 1:00pm. They also welcome in Southern Virginia for a non-conference set on Monday, starting at 3:00pm.
