The EMU softball women won the second game of today's doubleheader against Mary Washington after falling in the first. The nonconference split moves the Royals to 13-11 on the season.

The women return to conference play this weekend on Sunday when they head to Ferrum for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.

Mary Washington 7, EMU 2

The first game started out as a pitcher's duel through the first five innings. Kelsi Martin (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) started the game and only allowed four hits and one run until the sixth inning.

The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the second when an RBI single brought home a run. The Royals scored in the bottom of the second to match that run on an RBI single by Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy).

EMU took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Cassidey Chrisman (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Emily Davis (King George, Va./Fredericksburg Christian) who led off the inning with a walk.

Mary Washington would go on to get seven hits to score six runs in the top of the fifth inning all with no outs to retake the lead they would hold onto for the final two innings. An RBI double by Caroline Bird followed by a two-run triple by Hannah Bruns highlighted the inning.

Katelin Martin (Goochland, Va./Goochland) and Skylar Hedgepeth (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) combined for two scoreless innings in relief for EMU.

The Royals got off on the right foot in game two scoring first in the second inning. Nicole Mongold (Page County, Va./Page County) led off the inning with a single and worked her way to third. Chrisman hit a single to right field with two outs to score Mongold.

Alia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) hit an RBI single to right field to start the third inning. After a Martin single, Mongold hit an RBI single to score Miller to push the EMU lead to three.

Mary Washington scored two runs with two outs in the top of the fifth when a double and a walk led to back-to-back RBI singles.

The Royals got the first two batters on base in the bottom of the fifth before McKenzie Reams (Goochland, Va./Goochland) singled to center field to bring home a fourth run.

Miller got it done at the plate again in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run to left field that scored Danielle Brenneman (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) who got on with a single.

Miller threw a complete game to earn the win giving up just the three runs while picking up three strikeouts. At the plate she went 3-3 with three RBIs and scored twice.

Martin finished game two with three hits including the double. Mongold and Brenneman both had two hits.
