EMU's softball women earned another non-conference split on Tuesday in Staunton, Va. The Royals beat Mary Baldwin in the opener, scoring three times in the seventh for a 5-4 win. They left 10 runners on base in the nightcap, coming up short of a second comeback decision, to fall to 4-8 on the year.
After a seven-day break, Eastern Mennonite opens ODAC play next Wednesday, March 18, by hosting No. 18 Randolph-Macon. Game time is set for 3:00pm in Harrisonburg, with the 5:00pm game serving as the softball team's Rowdy Royals Game.
EMU 5, Mary Baldwin 4
The back-and-forth play started in the first inning of the opening game when Emily Davis (King George, Va./Fredericksburg Christian) scored on a two-out error. But five of the first six Fighting Squirrels to bat reached base, triggering two runs for the home team and a 2-1 lead.
The Royals tied it in the third, again triggered by Davis. She hit a one-out single and eventually scored on an RBI single from Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va./Broadway).
The scored remained 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth when Mary Baldwin put together four hits to put up another two-spot for a 4-2 lead.
Eastern Mennonite loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but failed to score. In the seventh, they finally broke through. Davis led off with a ground-rule double and then came in on Campbell's one-out single. Sierra Lantz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) hit a two-out single to put two runners on, and Korenn Paige (Winchester, Va./Sherando) drove a double to center, plating both runners to push EMU in front, 5-4.
Campbell then finished off the complete game win as the pitcher, despite a pair of two-out base runners, coaxing a ground ball to third for the final out.
Davis was a wrecking ball as the leadoff batter, going with 3-3 with a walk. The sophomore stole one base and scored three of EMU's runs. Campbell picked up two RBIs and scored another run. Paige also reached base twice and had the game-winning hit. Autumn Bailey (Harrisonburg, Va./East Rockingham) added a pair of singles.
Mary Baldwin 6, EMU 4
The Royals again scored a single run in the top of the first, this time with Cassidey Chrisman (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) driving in Courtney Hall (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) with a two-out hit. And the Fighting Squirrels repeated their performance in the bottom of the frame, only they scored four runs in game two for a bigger lead.
Davis launched her second home run of the season in the top of the second, but MBU plated two more in their at-bat to make for a 6-2 cushion.
Campbell, pitching a second straight complete game, settled down and held Mary Baldwin without another run the rest of the way.
The Royals had at least two runners on base in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, but failed to score. Finally in the sixth, Chrisman smacked a two-out double that brought in two runs to slice the deficit in half. But for the first time all game, EMU went down in order in the seventh, leaving them short of another late comeback.
Chrisman batted 3-4 with three RBIs, while Davis was 2-3 with a walk, charting two runs and an RBI.
Lantz and Paige each had a single and a walk.
