The EMU basketball women came away from the McDaniel Tip-Off Classic empty as they lost to host McDaniel today. The Royals fell 68-61 after dropping the first game of the classic yesterday.
The game was back and forth for the majority of the first half until EMU began to build a lead. Emily McCombs (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) continued her hot streak from Friday's game scoring the first five EMU points.
The Royals got out to as large as a ten point lead in the second quarter to go into halftime leading 30-23.
The Green Terror began the second half scoring ten unanswered points led by Anna Mondoro who finished as McDaniel's to scorer with 16 points. The two teams would continue to play even basketball entering the fourth quarter tied at 48.
Mondoro made a three-pointer to start the scoring for the Green Terror who held the advantage over the Royals the rest of the way. Caroline Ward made a jump shot with 22 seconds left to give McDaniel a four point lead with not enough time left for EMU to come back.
Lexi Deffenbaugh (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) led the Royals with 16 points. Lexi Dean (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) had eight points and eight rebounds off the bench. McCombs finished with 11 points.
McDaniel shot 41.9% (26-62) from the floor and 42.1% (8-19) from three-point range while EMU shot 38.1% (24-63) and 31.8% (7-22) behind the arc.
The Royals play their next game at home on Tuesday, October 20, against Southern Virginia in a non-conference matchup.
Sophomore Emily McCombs was named to the McDaniel Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament Team following play.
McCombs had 20 points in the first game against Widener and shot 46.4% from the field at the classic. The guard was also added six rebounds, five assists, and three steals over the weekend.
