EMU soccer women opened their season the same way they did last year, with a shutout win against Marymount on Friday afternoon. This year the offense took more of a stand as the Royals were able to score three times against the Saints.

The Royals scored early in the 13th minute when Liz Huffman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) took a pass from Hannah York (Richmond, Va./John Randolph Tucker) who then toe-poked it past the goalkeeper.

McKenzie VanHandel (Cream Ridge, N.J./NJ United Christian Academy) entered the game in the 43rd minute. She took the first pass she received and made the most of it running down the left side to score her first career goal and give EMU a two-goal cushion going into halftime.

In the 51st minute, York made the most of a weird bounce in the corner, that found the ball sneaking in just inside the post to put the Royals up 3-0 early in the second half.

The defense was stout the remainder of the match as backline was able to contain the Marymount attack and preserve the shutout for goalkeeper Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite), who finished with two saves.

The women have one day off before returning to the field to play their next match hosting Averett at 2:00pm on Sunday.
