With the cold weather and forecasted precipitation, this weekend's Jack Toms Invitational at Lynchburg College was shortened to a one-day event for EMU's track & field teams. The conditions again hampered the Royals' efforts, but a handful of individuals still had great performances.
Christian Gilliam (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) had a breakout effort in the 400m. The freshman continued his pattern started during the indoor season of shaving off around a second from his time at every race, this time smoking to a time of 50.28 to win his heat in a photo finish. For Gilliam, it was a huge PR over his 51.56 from last week's race at the W&L Carnival. He finished fifth in the race, and vaulted to No. 4 in the ODAC this season.
Connor Faint (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) ran his first outdoor 400m, and finished seventh with a time of 50.33. He is now No. 6 in the ODAC in the event. Jordan Short (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) took third in his heat and 11th overall with a time of 51.44.
High jumper Jamel Howard (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora) made his return to the field and tied for first by clearing 1.83m (6ft-0in). The 2017 ODAC outdoor champion, Howard was jumping for the first time since completing his season with EMU's basketball team.
Austin Hart (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) pulled up with a 17.58 in the 110m hurdles.
The men's 4x400m relay team finished second out of 11 teams, rocking a time of 3:27.32. Gilliam, Isaiah Sheppard (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View), Short and Faint teamed up in the race.
Grant Amoateng (Bristow, Va./Patriot) took fifth in the triple jump, with his best effort totaling 13.32m (43ft-8.5in). Then in the long jump, Amoateng landed at 6.12m (20ft-1in).
Laurie Serrell (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) was second in her heat of the 800m, with an outdoor PR of 2:29.88.
In the 1500m, Michaela Mast (Broadway, Va./Eastern Mennonite) ran a 5:09.32. Then in the 5k, Mast turned in a time of 19:23.70.
Brubaker, Williams, Serrell and Hannah Nichols (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) teamed up in the 4x400m relay for a time of 4:19.82.
Emily Hostetler (Marshallville, Ohio/Smithville) match her effort from last week in the pole vault, clearing 2.75m (9ft-0.25in).
The next outing for Eastern Mennonite's men and women is the VertKlasse Meeting set for April 6-7 in High Point, N.C.
