Meteoric excitement will come to fruition on Sept. 1 when the EMU women's triathlon program heads out for the first time.

Coach Bob Hepler released the schedule for the most recent addition to the Eastern Mennonite University collection of sports, and the Royals will head to the SoHo Dam Triathlon in Bristol, Tenn., to open their season and existence. Hepler put together a four-event schedule, with the possibility of adding a fifth, culminating at the East Regional in late October.

EMU will also send their team to the Davis & Elkins/EMU Dual (swim and run only) on Sept. 21, followed by the Tri at the Trump in Mooresville, N.C., on Oct. 6. The DL NCAA Women's Collegiate Qualifier functions as the East Regional, and is Oct. 19 at Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

The collegiate sport of women's triathlon features a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run.

Despite announcing the addition of the sport in March, Hepler expects a full scoring team already this first season, buoyed by current cross country/track & field athletes as well as existing EMU students and incoming recruits.
