A day after a come-from-behind win over North Carolina Wesleyan, the Royals could not manage another one. Visiting Guilford College set the tone early and took a 3-0 ODAC decision from EMU Saturday in Harrisonburg, dropping the women to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC.
The Royals struggled in serve receive all afternoon, giving up six straight points to GC's opening server, Tina Eucker. The women never recovered in the opener, falling 25-14.
A 5-0 start to the second again put the Quakers (9-5/4-2 ODAC) in the driver's seat. Eastern Mennonite answered with four straight, but that was it for any momentum as Guilford ran away to a 25-12 finish.
EMU came out a different team in the third, jumping to a 4-1 lead, their first of the day. The lead grew all the way to 18-11 after an ace from Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg). That's when GC's comeback began. The Quakers scored four in a row to chip into the cushion. The Royals maintained an edge to the score of 20-17 before Guilford took over. The visitors closed on an 8-1 run to steal a 25-21 clincher.
Eastern Mennonite hit -.010 as a team, less than 24 hours after hitting a season high .190 in the 3-1 win over North Carolina Wesleyan. The women managed only four aces while giving up eight to the Quakers.
Christian Ritter's 11 kills led Guilford, aided by 10 from Casey Davis. Eucker racked up five service aces to go with her 27 set assists.
Eastern Mennonite stays at home on Wednesday, hosting Virginia Wesleyan in another ODAC battle. Start time is 7:00pm in Yoder Arena.
