The Royals grabbed a 2-0 lead over visiting Methodist Friday night, but left things unfinished in a 3-2 loss.
EMU's volleyball women fall to 3-11 with their fifth straight defeat. They will try to turn things around on Saturday, needing wins in their ODAC tri-match in Lynchburg. The Royals will play Roanoke at 1:00pm, followed by host Lynchburg at 3:00pm.
Against Methodist, the women were at their best when their serves were on. A quick 8-1 start to the first set turned into a lead that they never gave up, taking a 25-21 win. MU went up 8-4 in the second to start a set full of runs. The Royals had the final one, scoring the final four points to win, 25-20.
A 9-2 run midway through the third gave Methodist a 25-19 win to stay alive, but it looked like Eastern Mennonite would close the door in the fourth.
Lead by four ace serves from Amy Goodman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian), the Royals scored eight in a row to break off an 8-8 tie, but they couldn't hold the lead. A block from Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) still had the margin at 21-14 before a 9-2 run from MU tied things up at 23-23. The women served for a match point at 24-23, but Methodist answered with a pair of 2-0 jabs to steal a 27-25 decision. The visitors ended the set on a 13-4 tear.
The Monarchs jumped to a small lead in the fifth before EMU tied the score at 8-8. Methodist answered with the next two points to stay on top, and then scored the final five points of the night to win, 15-9.
Eastern Mennonite landed eight aces against just seven errors, and put down a season high 13 blocks, but the women stymied themselves by only hitting .042.
Maria Yoder (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) was good for 13 kills and five blocks. Meredith Stinnette (Lynch Station, Va./Altavista) landed 12 kills. Hoskins and Erin Brubaker (Goessel, Kan./Goessel) each had seven kills. Carly Gingerich (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) had 26 assists.
Candice Shaheen (Scottsville, Va./Fluvanna County) made 24 digs out of the back row. Goodman had 13 digs to go with her four aces.
Brittany Ter Meer led Methodist with 12 kills while fellow middle Jasmine Tapscott had nine blocks. Libero Megan Andrews racked up 30 digs.
