Defense Not Enough In ODAC Tri-Match

EMU's volleyball women played an ODAC Tri-Match on Saturday and took a pair of 3-0 loses from Lynchburg and the host, Roanoke.

The Royals fall to 8-6 on the season and 1-3 in conference as they look towards a road matchup at Emory & Henry on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7:00pm.

Lynchburg 3, EMU 0

The Hornets came out firing in the first set as they took it 25-16. Then the second was much of the same as Lynchburg pulled out a 25-22 set advantage.

The Royals were able to get the third set to a 23-23 tie before the Hornets finished the match off with two kills to finish it.

Hannah Johnson (Staunton, Va./Wilson Memorial) led in kills with 12 swinging at .345% while picking up 13 digs. Tori Wigley (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) had 15 assists while Abbi Hawkins (Middlebury, Ind./Bethany Christian) had 9 assists and 8 digs.

Roanoke 3, EMU 0

Roanoke took advantage of their break between games to jump-start their offense in the first set taking it 25-12 over the Royals. The second set went similar for the Maroons as they won it 25-17.

The third set was controlled by the Royals up until the final points when Roanoke took the lead back in time to finish the match with a 25-22 set win.

The Maroons swung at a .218 hitting percentage racking up 45 kills. The Royals held their own on defense compiling 78 digs in the three sets.

Johnson led with 12 kills and 22 digs while Wigley had 17 assists. Amy Goodman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) had seven kills and five digs while libero Tarynn Clark (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) had 18 digs.
