Jeff Tyson enters his third seasonon on the heels of the program's best season since 2003.

With Tyson's first recruiting class, the Royals experienced a rebirth in 2013 starting the year 9-9 before injuries derailed the finish.  Still, the women earned their first ODAC victories in four years and were the only team in the ODAC to take a game each from conference powerhouses Randolph-Macon College and Washington and Lee University.

In Tyson's first season at Eastern Mennonite in 2012, the young Royals finished 4-19, but made noticeable strides in team growth and maturing.  In the classroom, the team earned a 3.34 GPA and was given the AVCA Team Academic Award.  EMU was the only team in the ODAC to win the award.

Prior to his arrival at EMU, Tyson, a native of Elizabethtown, Pa., spent many years in Indiana, where he was heavily involved in the region’s volleyball scene.  Included in that time was four years as an assistant coach at Indiana Wesleyan University.  He also graduated cum laude from IWU and added a Master’s Degree from Ball State University in physical education with a coaching specialization.

During his seven seasons as a coach or manager with NAIA Indiana Wesleyan, Tyson was involved in all facets of running a successful program, from recruiting and public relations to weight and individual skill training.  The Wildcats compiled a record of 108-66 in his four years as an assistant, including three campaigns with a winning percentage .643 or higher.

“I am passionate about developing teams that focus on the fundamentals and the details of the game of volleyball on both offense and defense,” he said.  “When fans come to a match they can expect to watch an exciting volleyball match with a cohesive team that plays hard and hustles for every point.”

Jeff and his wife Ruth live in Harrisonburg.  They recently welcomed home their first child, daughter Jenna.
